Changing the world with the power of design
If COVID-19 is a portal, a getaway to a new world, we have the unique opportunity to start a conversation about what we want to bring in the new world, and what we want to leave behind. Designers have an incredible power to inspire and make change happen. We want to hear from them and create a conversation around the power of design and the changes we wish for. Please join us!
Nearly one billion people around the globe have been quarantined to their homes in efforts to slow down the spread of the virus and flatten the curve. For the majority of the world, this is unnavigated territory. It’s causing major waves of distress, sadness, and anxiety in the face of uncertainty. While we have no control over the external things that happen to us, we have complete control on how we can take action. So, we decided to start a new social media campaign with our community of both fashion and interiors designers to inspire change.
At the beginning of April, Indian writer, Arundhati Roy, wrote an amazing article for the Financial Times where she talks about pandemics as portals.
“Historically, pandemics have forced humans to break with the past and imagine their world anew. This one is no different. It is a portal, a gateway between one world and the next. We can choose to walk through it, dragging the carcasses of our prejudice and hatred, our avarice, our data banks and dead ideas, our dead rivers and smoky skies behind us. Or we can walk through lightly, with little luggage, ready to imagine another world. And ready to fight for it.”
We believe designers have a great role in future changes on the other side of the portal. They can make a product to last forever — “If you want something to last, make it as lovable as a Labrador” wrote playful architect Lance Hosey in his The Shape of Green. They also influence a product environmental impact by choosing the materials and designing the product itself — “over 80 percent of a product’s environmental impact is decided upon at the design stage”. And they can influence behaviors and habits in numerous ways.
So now we want to hear from you. Join us in inspiring the world by sharing your creative inspirations. We are asking all designers to share a picture from their creative work space and a quote about the power of design to create change and make it happen.
In the face of change we can see fear, or we can see chance. When the disruption from the virus passes, we will have the opportunity to start fresh and rebuild, as Arundhati said, another world. How does that world look to you and how can design contribute to its creation?
We will be sharing some initial quotes from the designers we work with every day and that are creating beautiful products also using our ECONYL® regenerated nylon. If you want to participate here are a few instructions:
● Share an image of your creative process/sketches or your creative space tagging on Instagram @econylbrand and with #designersforchange
● Share with us a quote about the power of design for change and what it means to you and the work you do.
Designers, this is the time to do what it is that you do best: create; adapt; imagine. As proud creators, this is the time to step up and be a voice of hope and perspective for the world.
